Extas, Add-Ons, and Specialty Options: A Guide to Moving Services

Every move is different. But, with a bit of advance planning (and knowing how to shop) you can build a custom move that meets your needs. The Moving Feedback team helped us put together a list of all the most important services, add-ons, and features:

  • Packing and Unpacking Services: Packing is a pain. Why not let the pros handle it? Be on the lookout for movers that offer packing and unpacking services.

  • Storage Solutions: If you have too much stuff (or you just need extra time) storage provides extra flexibility.

  • Specialized Moving Services: Antiques, pianos, pool tables, and all those other fragile-yet-bulky items will need extra TLC. Look for specialized moving services.

  • Flexible Scheduling: Your movers may be right on schedule, but there’s no guarantee your plane won’t be delayed. For long distance moves, flexible scheduling really helps.

Packing and Unpacking Services

  • Full-Service Packing: Full service packing means your movers do EVERYTHING. Not just the loading and hauling, but the boxing, bubble wrap, taping, and labeling. It may cost a little extra, but the convenience is priceless.

  • Packing Supplies: If you’re trying to DIY your packing, some movers offer packing supplies for sale or rent. This ranges from boxes and padding to furniture dollies.

  • Unpacking Services: Of course, once you get to your location, your movers can handle the unpacking, too. Some companies will even arrange your furniture!

Storage Solutions

  • Types of Storage: Storage units come in all shapes and sizes. Some are about the size of a locker or closet, and some are as big as a two car garage. Certain storage providers also offer climate controlled units, which is great for art and electronics!

  • Duration of Storage: You’ll be paying for your storage for as long as you’ll need it. Typically this means a month-to-month fee. If you really want to cut down on expenses, get rid of your excess as soon as possible - preferably before you even move.

Specialized Moving Services

  • Handling Special Items: If you book premium movers, they’ll have the know-how to handle your special items with care. Whether it’s art, pianos, antiques, or anime figurines, they can provide the extra TLC you need.

  • Special Equipment: Special items require special equipment - and the skill to use it. Some movers offer specialty crating (think building an entire box around your items), and there’s also winches and cranes for when something needs to go out the window.

Flexible Scheduling

  • Scheduling Options: In an ideal world, you would arrive at the same time as your movers. But delays happen, and there’s always a chance you’ll be rushing to catch a moving truck that won’t wait. If a mover offers a flexible moving window, take it.

  • Reliability: There’s also the chance that you’ll be stuck waiting around for your movers instead. To plan around this, ask your movers if they have any other moves bundled on the same truck. This may mean delays, so you might want to book a hotel to be safe.

Tracking

  • Real-Time Updates: GPS tracking is becoming more and more popular in the moving industry, but it’s not completely standard. Fortunately, since it’s such a new innovation, movers will talk it up as a bonus feature. You’ll always know who’s offering it.

  • Communication: Aside from high tech gizmos, don’t be afraid to call your mover for updates. If they offer a concierge service, that’s even better: You won’t get bounced around between departments when you’re trying to get info about your move.

Wrapping Up

There’s a ton of different movers out there, and they all offer their own unique menu of services. To really find out who’s best for you, think about your belongings, and what services you absolutely can’t live without. Not only will this give you a better idea of the extras and add-ons you’ll have to pay for, but it’ll also weed out the movers that don’t offer those must-have options.

Best of luck with your move! If you’re ready to get started, make sure you check out some of our other helpful guides to make moving day even easier!
