Republicans Grieving Dolly Parton Defunded Her Children’s Book Charity

As the world mourns the death of country music icon Dolly Parton, reports have resurfaced showing Republican lawmakers in states like Indiana and Missouri reduced or eliminated millions of dollars in state matching funds for her philanthropic Imagination Library.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book-gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children every month from birth until they turn 5.

Operating across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and the Republic of Ireland, the nonprofit has gifted over 332 million books worldwide.

These legislative actions resurfaced in public debate following the announcement of the country music icon’s passing on August 25 at age 80, prompting widespread bipartisan tributes.

“The world grieves with us today. And yet we find ourselves just as certain about what comes next. For decades, Dolly & the team at The Dollywood Foundation — home of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library — worked to build something that would last for generations. So it will,” the organization wrote on social media Tuesday, shortly after Parton’s death after a brief battle with cancer was announced by family. “The work ahead has never felt more meaningful, and we will carry it forward as she lifts us all up."

Singer Ricky Davila exposed the hypocrisy in a social media post in which he wrote, "I don't want to hear fake tributes to Dolly Parton from fascist republicans, I'll never forget them defunding her Imagination Library childhood reading program earlier this year. Spare us the b-------, we see you."

Jeff Conyers, president of the Dollywood Foundation, strongly urged Republican lawmakers to restore public matching funds for Imagination Library after several GOP-led states quietly cut the program from their budgets.

As the head of the Dollywood Foundation, Conyers pushed back against state budget cuts — particularly in Indiana, where Republican Governor Mike Braun removed a 50 percent state funding match, choosing instead to rely entirely on private philanthropy.

No Democratic-led state has defunded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, but reports indicate that some Democratic-led or leaning areas like Washington have faced scrutiny or reductions in state-backed allocations, while major funding cuts have instead occurred in Republican-led states such as Indiana and Missouri.

“The beauty of the Imagination Library is that it unites us all – regardless of politics – because every child deserves the chance to dream big and succeed,” Conyers said in 2025.

Conyers emphasized that state leaders had an immediate opportunity to "reaffirm their commitment to our Imagination Library partnership and the future of the state's youngest children."

Lawmakers slashed the program's state budget from roughly $6 million down to $2 million. Due to the budget gap, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education froze all new child enrollments as of July 1.

“We are unsure of the future of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Missouri as a state-funded program,” said Missouri DOE communications director Lucas Bond in June. “Partnering with local programs could be a possibility in the future with time, funding, and partnership coordination.”

While broader budget adjustments have constrained state-level allocations, the Dollywood Foundation confirmed it remains fully committed to continuing the global distribution of the literacy initiative.

In 2024, Parton expressed her elation about the initial funding, saying, “It makes me happy to think that I’m giving them a gift that matters to them, and it makes me happy to know that I’ve made them feel special.”

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce made a $2 million donation to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library around the time of their wedding in July 2026.

Parton thanked the newlyweds in a video shortly thereafter, jokingly asking the couple if she could have their future firstborn child because it "is going to be one special baby."
