'Teen Mom OG' Recap: Amber Portwood Sobs Over Rocky Relationship With Daughter Leah: 'It Truly Breaks My Heart'
Amber Portwood couldn’t hold back the tears.
On the latest episode of Teen Mom OG on Tuesday, September 14, the TV personality tearfully opened up about her troubled relationship with her 12-year-old daughter, Leah.
“It truly breaks my heart that Leah and I are drifting apart,” the 31-year-old said on the show. “For the past six years, I’ve been seeing a psychiatrist. I really think if I could go to therapy with Leah, it would bring us closer together. But Gary and Kristina feel differently.”
Portwood shares daughter Leah with her ex-fiancé Gary Shirley, who is now married to Kristina Anderson.
“We’ve already talked about therapy for Leah, but Gary wasn’t for it at all,” she said in the confessional. “Therapy is a good thing to get you and your mother back together and having that mediator can get you to open up and understand a bit. I think she’ll be happier in life to understand a bit more of what the past was and how I am today.”
She continued, “It’s okay to have a mom that has been through these things. You shouldn’t be ashamed about it. Therapy is something that needs to happen, but there’s nothing I can do about it because [Gary] does have primary custody of her.”
“I want my daughter back,” she added during Tuesday’s episode.
As OK! previously reported, the MTV star’s relationship with her eldest child is more strained than ever. Portwood told the cameras during the Tuesday, September 7, episode that the mother-daughter duo aren’t on good terms.

“My relationship with her has changed a lot. I haven’t seen her in quite some time,” she said on the show.
She also insisted that “someone is in [Leah’s] ear,” after the pre-teen previously claimed on the show that Portood “just birthed” her and “left.”
Portwood also has a son James, who she shares with ex Andrew Glennon.
Back in August, Glennon posted a cryptic Instagram story insinuating that the mom-of-two was abusive to their tot.
“You hit your baby boy...Really?” he wrote at the time.
Portwood was outraged by the accusation and later filed court papers demanding that Glennon be held in contempt of court for the “defamatory” and “false” statements. She’s also asking for full custody.
The estranged exes have been duking it out in court since they split in 2019, although Glennon currently has primary custody of James.
