Why Longevity Begins With Your Gut At VIVAMAYR

The intimate lakeside property certainly looks the part of a luxurious European retreat, with spectacular mountain views, saunas, treatment rooms and private access to the crystal-clear lake. But VIVAMAYR considers itself a medical health resort first and a hotel second.

Its philosophy is based around Modern Mayr Medicine, an updated interpretation of the work of Austrian physician Dr. Franz Xaver Mayr, who developed his theories about digestion more than a century ago.

VIVAMAYR Managing Director Serhan Güven sums up the philosophy simply.

“It’s our belief that longevity starts with the gut,” he exclusively tells OK!. “It’s not only important what you eat, but how you eat. If you have a healthy gut and digestive system, you’re also in better shape mentally. It’s about that gut-brain connection.”

We have been doing and believing in longevity at Mayr for more than 20 years — before longevity was really even a word people were using.”

VIVAMAYR Managing Director Serhan Güven tells OK! the retreat’s philosophy is simple: “Longevity starts with the gut.”

What Are You Actually Detoxing From at VIVAMAYR?

The word “detox” can conjure up images of green juices, starvation diets and dubious promises about flushing mysterious toxins from the body but that isn’t really what VIVAMAYR is about.

Here, the reset is more about giving the digestive system a break while temporarily removing many of the things that have become commonplace in modern life: alcohol, sugar, caffeine, highly processed foods, constant snacking, overeating, stress, inadequate sleep and the habit of simply eating far too quickly.

It is less about starving yourself and more about stripping things back. And crucially, there is no universal VIVAMAYR diet.

Shortly after arriving, every guest is assigned a personal doctor who oversees their stay. Medical testing and an initial consultation help determine an individualized program covering nutrition, treatments, movement and supplements.

Most first-time guests come for around a week, giving the body time to adjust to the program and allowing doctors to monitor their progress. Those who have embraced the Mayr philosophy , and return regularly for their reset , can stay considerably longer, with some repeat guests checking in for as long as three weeks.

For OK!’s five-night stay, our physician was Dr. Adriana Fink, who quickly made one thing clear: what happens in the dining room is every bit as important as what happens in the treatment rooms.

I would say the foundation of the Mayr approach is consciousness and awareness,” Dr. Fink exclusively tells OK!. “Dr. Mayr obviously didn’t talk about that 100 years ago because people were different and the world was different. Today we have different problems, so it’s about becoming conscious of what your body and particularly your digestion needs.”

And that consciousness begins with something relatively simple. Chewing. A lot of chewing.

Why Chewing Is So Important At VIVAMAYR

"The major thing is chewing,” Dr. Fink explains. "The best piece of wood will not burn if the oven doesn’t work.”

In other words, you can obsess over organic vegetables, supplements, vitamins and the latest superfoods, but if your digestive system isn’t processing what you’re putting into it effectively, the theory goes, you’re missing a crucial part of the equation.

You can have incredibly nutritious food with all the vitamins and minerals, but simply putting it into your system isn’t enough,” she says. “For digestion, I think chewing is one of the most important things.”

Chewing more sounds simple enough until you actually try it. Meals at VIVAMAYR become exercises in mindfulness. Eating slowly and chewing thoroughly means you become acutely aware of when you’re full, how quickly you normally eat and how often food is consumed almost unconsciously at home. Your phone isn’t the dinner companion here - your digestive system is.

After your initial tests and consultation, your doctor determines the diet you’ll follow during your stay. And this is not a restaurant where you can sweet-talk your server into adding a side of fries.

Your medically prescribed diet is communicated directly to the kitchen, and the staff follows it strictly. Breakfast, lunch and dinner arrive according to the plan created for you, meaning two people sitting at the same table may be eating entirely different meals. There is no quietly ordering something else because you don’t fancy tonight’s option. The kitchen knows what your doctor has prescribed — and that is what you’re getting.

The dramatically smaller portions can take some getting used to at first, especially when compared with the generous serving sizes most of us have become accustomed to. But meals here aren’t designed around indulgence. Instead, they encourage you to slow down and reconsider not only what you eat, but how you eat it.

Dining quickly becomes one of the most revealing parts of the VIVAMAYR experience. Without wine, oversized portions, endless courses, between-meal snacks or a phone competing for your attention, you become surprisingly aware of your relationship with food, including how quickly you eat and how much you actually need to feel satisfied.

That, it turns out, is exactly the point.

Why Celebrities Love The Total Reset That VIVAMAYR Offers

It’s little surprise VIVAMAYR has attracted an impressive celebrity clientele over the years. Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss have both been publicly linked to Maria Wörth, while VIVAMAYR’s retreats have reportedly welcomed an A-list crowd including Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Hurley, Karlie Kloss and Sarah Ferguson.

Rebel Wilson has also spoken publicly about her experiences with VIVAMAYR after visiting its former sister property in Altaussee, Austria, while members of the Rolling Stones have reportedly passed through the retreats over the years.

But once inside Maria Wörth, celebrity doesn’t feel particularly relevant. There’s no velvet rope, scene-y restaurant or VIP section. Guests wander the halls in robes, move between medical appointments and sit down to their individually prescribed meals alongside everyone else.

If you look in our dining room, you will see people from 20 different nationalities,” Güven says. “No matter what country they come from, they are actually very similar because health is the common goal. Everyone is here under the same umbrella of taking care of their health.

It’s also a philosophy that keeps many guests returning year after year. Güven has a simple analogy for explaining why: think of your body like a valuable car.

If you drive a nice car and take care of it, you still bring it in for an oil change,” he tells OK!. “You change the filter, you change the oil and you make sure everything is working properly.”

So why, he asks, wouldn’t we give our bodies the same attention?

Coming here is a reset for the body,” he says. “Treat your body like you would a nice car. It’s the most valuable thing you have. Give yourself that inspection once a year and invest in yourself.”

That reset extends far beyond what happens at the dining table. Alongside the nutritional program, each day can be filled with an extensive range of medical and wellness treatments, with individual schedules tailored to each guest’s needs.

Medical examinations and diagnostics sit alongside treatments including abdominal therapies, massages, acupuncture, IV infusions, movement sessions and colon hydrotherapy. Then there is maybe the simplest therapy of all: the setting itself. Between appointments, guests can walk beside the lake, swim in its crystal-clear waters, use the spa or simply sit and take in the mountains while doing something many of us have become remarkably bad at — nothing.

Days start early. Dinner comes early. Bedtime suddenly becomes appealing. The usual distractions begin to fall away, and the rhythm of life becomes noticeably slower.

That could be why so many guests return year after year. Rather than treating VIVAMAYR as a one-off wellness vacation, many see it as an annual reset — a chance to step away from everyday routines, check in on their health and give their body some much-needed attention before returning to normal life.

What We Learnt after 5 Nights at VIVAMAYR

Five nights after arriving at Lake Wörthersee, perhaps the biggest surprise is that VIVAMAYR’s most valuable takeaway isn’t found in a finger prick blood test, an IV drip or even on a carefully prescribed plate. It comes from realizing just how much we ask of our bodies while barely stopping to pay attention to them.

VIVAMAYR gives you the rare opportunity to do exactly that. You eat more slowly, sleep properly, move, rest and start noticing the everyday habits that are surprisingly easy to ignore when life is moving at full speed. Without the usual distractions, it also becomes easier to recognize how often we eat because we’re bored, stay up later than we should, reach for another coffee when we’re tired or simply push through stress without giving it much thought.

For Dr. Fink, the goal isn’t to leave VIVAMAYR attempting to overhaul every aspect of your life at once. It’s about identifying the thing that could make the biggest difference.

The most important thing is to ask yourself, ‘What is my biggest issue?’” she says. “Is it overeating? Not exercising enough? Not drinking enough water? Everyone has a different issue.”

And the answer isn’t always to become more disciplined. Sometimes it can be exactly the opposite.

Some people are too disciplined,” Dr. Fink adds. “Then we have to tell them to have more joy. Too much discipline isn’t always good either.

Five days at an Austrian medical retreat isn’t going to completely transform the way you live, and not every part of the program will follow you home. That isn’t really the point. VIVAMAYR gives you enough distance from everyday life to recognize the habits that might actually be worth changing.

There’s also something surprisingly appealing about temporarily giving up control. Your doctor decides what you eat, your schedule tells you where to be and much of the usual decision-making disappears. By the time you leave, you’re ready for a little more freedom, but you may also find yourself missing the simplicity of it all.

The real test begins back home, when nobody is stopping you from ordering dessert or pouring another glass of wine. But you return more aware of how you eat, how you treat your body and which everyday habits deserve a little more attention.

And, if nothing else, you’ll definitely remember to chew your food a little longer.
