The 2019 BET Awards went down on Sunday, June 23. Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus' performance of their hit "Old Town Road" was one of the many exciting moments that took place inside The Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Cardi B and Offset’s opener included an unbelievable performance of Nipsey’s song “Higher." The “Bodak Yellow” rapper went on to win Best Album and Best Female Rapper later on in the evening.
Nipsey’s girlfriend and the mother of his son Lauren London accepted the Humanitarian Award on his behalf. She was joined by their son Kross, his sister Samantha Smith and mother Angelique Smith and Nipsey's daughter Emani Asghedom.
Tyler Perry delivered a powerful speech after accepting the Ultimate Icon Award. The 49-year-old spoke about how he built his studio in one of the poorest areas of Atlanta “so that young black kids could see that a black man did that, and they can do it too.”

The actor/director also talked about how he would hire now A-list stars like Idris Elba and Viola Davis when no one else would. "God blessed me to be in a position to be able to hire them. I was trying to help somebody cross.”
Lil Nas X, 20, and Billy Ray, 57, brought the house down when they performed “Old Town Road." The country legend received a warm welcome by the BET Awards audience and across social media when he took to the stage.
Social media was also abuzz when legendary rapper Snoop Dogg won the Dr. Bobby Jones gospel award. He beat out established artists in that genre including Tori Kelly and Kirk Franklin.
