First hint, the two both have the number 8418 tattooed on them, which has a very, very special meaning.

The number is Pete's late father's FDNY badge number when he was a firefighter. He lost his life during the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Besides the tattoos, Pete recently revealed that he gifted his soon-to-be wife with the FDNY pendant that his father wore when he died in the Twin Towers.
