Ashley Tisdale is gearing up to drop her first album since 2009’s Guilty Pleasure. During an interview with Access Live, the actress/singer got candid about what helped her get back into the studio. Read on for the latest.
Though the 33-year-old admitted that her own depression and anxiety was a huge influence on the new album, Symptoms, talking about it wasn’t her initial goal. She explained, “It wasn't something that was like ‘I’m gonna tackle this.’ It’s just something that naturally, organically happened. I’ve been in and out of the studio for 4 years and I knew in order for me to get back into music, it had to be important.”
She also said, “I wanted to make someone at home feel less alone in their journey. It's hard to be vulnerable. It's scary, but I think that it's important to share what I've been through, and say that I'm human and I go through those things too."
The Disney channel alum also took a moment to discuss the stigma surrounding those who suffer from depression.

"Whenever I'm with my friends, it's really easy to be like, 'Who suffers from anxiety?' and everyone will raise their hand. But if you say 'Who suffers from depression?' no one will raise their hand because there's a stigma around the word and I think we have to let go of that," she said.
Finally she shared, “Sometimes this world can be really dark and the whole point of this album is that you need to be your own light and you need to get yourself through it. It really is a journey."
