Just a few weeks after announcing they’d be combining musical forces for the On The Run tour, surveillance footage leaked of Solange Knowles attacking her brother-in-law Jay-Z as they left a Met Gala after-party in May. Beyoncé was also present in the elevator. But let her security guard Julius de Boer break up the scuffle.

The Knowles-Carter family eventually released a statement on the fight. But that didn’t help cool rumors that the altercation had been sparked by Jay-Z’s reported infidelity in his marriage.

Though they put on a united front on stage and in public, sources speaking to Hollywood Life said that Bey and Jay barely spoke backstage during their tour. 

Then Beyoncé added her own fuel to the divorce rumors when she changed one of the lyrics in her song “Resentment,” a track that talks about a woman who has been cheated on in a relationship. At their Cincinnati, Ohio, show, Bey changed the line "Been ridin’ with you for six years” to “Been ridin’ with you for 12 years.” This led many fans to believe the the singer was referencing her own 12-year relationship with Jay-Z.

In July, Beyoncé was spotted shopping alone for an apartment in New York City. This led to increased chatter that the pair planned to split by the time the tour ended in September. Radar Online reports.

In an interview with The Insider, Beyonce’s lead backup dancer Ashley Everett came to the couple’s defense. She said that she was over the divorce rumors and the On The Run tour was actually a testament to the couple’s bond. “It shows the love, it shows the affection. The love, the hate, the relationship. Real things that go on in relationships,” Everett said.

Their shameless displays of affection on stage failed to convince some fans of the sincerity of the couple’s relationship. Beyoncé's father Matthew Knowles went as far as to claim that they faked the elevator fight to increase ticket sales for their tour, Radar Online reports.

But instead of pulling them apart, the summertime madness of OTR may have actually served as inspiration for Mrs. Carter and Hov. According to E!, the couple are now working on a new venture of love, a joint studio album.
