Big Brother houseguest Sam Smith was shaken up after he received news that his grandfather had passed away. The contestant had just won the Power of Veto when he got the tragic update on the July 10 episode.
Sam won the Power of Veto on Wednesday’s episode. His celebrations were cut short when he was called to the Diary Room where he received a letter from his family informing him that his grandfather passed away.
“I thought he was doing ok. He always seemed like he was doing ok,” he told cameras through tears.
Sam revealed he was very close to his grandfather and that he called him for advice right before entering the house.

He said in a confessional, “We all know when people pass away it’s extremely difficult, but being in the Big Brother house is really, really hard because you’re not able to be there with your family.” His houseguests rallied around him to comfort his time in need.
“It made me once again realize that I am in this game for me and my family, and me and my family only,” Sam declared. “It even more pushes me to make sure that I make a great decision with using or not using this Veto. I need to figure out how I can get to the end for that 500K.”
Housemates Kemi Fakunle and Jessica Milagros were both in jeopardy but given the circumstances, Sam decided not to use the Power of Veto. “Kemi and Jess, I love you guys. But right now, I don’t want to create ripples in this awesome Big Brother pool,” he said during the ceremony.
