PHOTOSRapper Bow Wow Reveals Cough Syrup Addiction: ‘I Almost Died’

Since the tragic passing of Mac Miller last week, many artists are speaking out about addiction in order to spread awareness. Earlier this week, Bow Wow took to Twitter and dropped a bombshell about his own struggles with sobriety.
In a string of tweets, the “Let Me Hold You” rapper admitted that he was once addicted to lean. “Lean” or “purple drank” or “purp” is the street name for the combination of promethazine and codeine-based cough syrup mixed with soda.
Mac was also addicted to the substance and was very open about his battle to kick the habit. During an interview with Vibe Magazine in 2013, he explained, “It’s rough. I went through depression and all that, but I was straight. I mean you can ask the people on my team, and they’ll tell you it was serious… but you’re talking to the person that was doing the drugs, so of course, I’ll be like ‘it wasn’t that serious.’ I know that I have an addictive personality, and it’s not always a substance.”
Bow Wow revealed, “To the youth- Stop with these dumb a** drugs. Im going to let something out. When me and omarion worked on FACE OFF album. I was high off lean everyday! When yall saw me on BET going off on torae i was high off lean. My attitude everything changed.”
He then talked about the difficult withdrawal symptoms he experienced, “I came off stage and passed out woke up in the hospital i was having withdraws. I never felt a pain like that ever.”

“It was summer but i was walking round with 3 hoodies on because i was so cold. I missed the chicago show of that tour baltimore show BECAUSE I WAS F—ING HIGH AND SICK!!!! that sh** is not cool and i was doing it to be cool!” he continued.
Then he urged any followers who are currently struggling with addiction to seek help. The Ohio-native wrote, “Kick that sh**! Be a good son or daughter. Be the best you. Ima start being more vocal. We gotta save the youth from going out early. Parents watch your kids. Explain to them. We want yall to live man. I almost died f***ing with syrup.”
He added, “DRUG FREE IS THE WAY TO BE! smarten up tighten up out here. We cant lose no more of you. Not one! I love all yall. The young artist all the kids around the world.. dont follow a trend. Break the cycle.”
