Abbie Duggar has had a difficult pregnancy! On the December 10 episode of Counting On she revealed she was in and out of the hospital for severe morning sickness. Abbie later found out she suffers from hyperemesis gravidarum.
“I am currently eight weeks along and I’m feeling awful,” Abbie, 27, said. “I pretty much just been lying in bed, go to the bathroom and maybe to the couch and that’s about it.”
The former nurse revealed, “Morning sickness has hit me pretty hard. I’ve pretty much been bed-bound and other than that we’ve been going to the E.R. Other than that, I’ve been admitted to the hospital a couple of times on top of that. It’s been a pretty rough go of it.”
“It’s definitely hard watching Abbie in pain, just wishing I could take it away, do something to help her,” Abbie’s husband John David told cameras.
Abbie tried to look on the bright side and said, “At this point, I have to remind myself why I’m so sick. It honestly hasn’t been very enjoyable. I just keep saying, ‘There’s a baby coming! There’s a baby coming! This has a good ending.’”

The former nurse was later diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, “a condition characterized by severe nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and electrolyte disturbance,” according to the American Pregnancy Association. “Mild cases are treated with dietary changes, rest, and antacids. More severe cases often require a stay in the hospital so that the mother can receive fluid and nutrition through an intravenous line (IV).”
“We made multiple visits to the ER for dehydration,” John David, 29, told Us Weekly in October. “She couldn’t eat, pretty much, or drink, or anything. So she was actually on IVs and had IVs at home. So that was a pretty scary time.”
John David and Abbie are going to be first-time parents. Their daughter is in January 2020.
On the December 10 episode, Abbie broke the news to John David’s twin sister Jana. “I got you a birthday present,” she told Jana. “I got you a baby for your birthday! It’s due right on y’all’s birthday, that week.” The twins celebrate their birthday on January 12.
