Francia Raisa is opening up about the difficult road to recovery following her kidney transplant surgery with Selena Gomez. While the surgery was the scariest part for the best friends, the hardest part came afterwards, when Francia says they both “went through a depression.”
Before undergoing the procedure, Francia spoke to her social worker about what to expect. “It’s going to be hard, the recipient is going to glow and she’s going to recover a lot faster than the donor because she’s getting something she needs and you are losing something you don’t need to lose,” her social worker explained. “It’s going to be hard.”
“And it was hard,” Francia confirmed to Self magazine. “Selena and I both went through a depression.”
During the on-camera interview, Francia showed off her scars from the surgery, including a “C-section scar” at the base of her stomach.

“Your scars don’t define you. It’s a part of your story. It’s a part of the story that makes you special and you different,” she told Self.
As OK! readers know, Selena underwent her kidney transplant surgery in the summer of 2017 due to complications from lupus. Francia was a match and donated her kidney to Selena.
