Art Imitates Life: Issa Rae Reveals She Almost Became A Lyft Driver

Issa Rae's critically-acclaimed show Insecure came back for a third season last night on HBO. Her character (of the same name) became a Lyft driver on the premiere as a means to pick up some extra income. Turns out that job is something she almost did in her real life.

Issa's character takes the Lyft gig as a secondary income after she gets demoted from her full-time job at a peer empowerment organization called We Got Y'All.

She finds herself still sleeping on the couch of her friend Daniel (Y'Lan Noel) after moving out of her old apartment. Their complicated relationship with one another was a major focal point over the past two seasons which continued into last night's episode.

Issa spoke with Page Six about the third season of Insecure recently, where she revealed all about how she almost became a Lyft driver in real life.

The 33-year-old told them that she rented a car to drive to Malibu when she was writing one of the episodes of Insecure. She ended up filling the vehicle with a full tank of gas.

She did not want to return the car on a full tank of gas so she thought about becoming a Lyft driver. That did not work out for her, however, due to traffic violations.

It's not a bad career to have, as fellow actor Barkhab Abdi was a limo driver before getting his big break in the film Captain Phillips. That role earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and now he's become a big star because of it.
