Some people quit drinking for spiritual reasons. John Mayer quit drinking after one wild night at Drake’s 30th birthday party back in 2016 — and he hasn’t looked back since. Read on for the latest.

It was a year ago last month when John took to Twitter to share that he “decided to give drinking a break.” At the time, he didn’t share much about why he came to that decision. He only revealed that it was “a return to investment.”
But in the November issue of Complex, the musician got really candid about what exactly happened to make him quit booze cold turkey. It was after he “went deep one night” at Drake’s 30th birthday party.

“I made quite a fool of myself,” he admitted. “It took me weeks to stop doing this made a pained face every morning I woke up.” So, he had a long, hard confrontation with himself.
“I was in my sixth day of the hangover,” the 41-year-old reflected. “That’s how big the hangover was. I looked out the window and went, ‘Okay, John, what percentage of your potential would you like to have? Because if you say you’d like 60, and you’d like to spend the other 40 having fun, that’s fine. But what percentage of what is available to you would you like to make happen? I went, ‘100.’ The voice in my head said, ‘Okay. Do you know what that means?’ I went, ‘We don’t have to talk anymore. I get it.’”
From that day forward—now weeks after Drake’s bash on October 23 that year—John took a stand. “If you look at drinking the way you would look at anything else — which is risk-reward, what am I giving up? What am I getting? — it’s some of the worst odds that ever existed,” he concluded. “You have to fight really hard to look at it from a critical point of view because it’s constantly pushed on you. Every Friday and Saturday, on social media, there is enabling going on for drinking.”
