John McCain died this weekend from brain cancer and his surviving family members are now trying to move forward with their grief. A source provided an update to People on how Roberta McCain, his 106-year-old mother, is handling his loss.
The insider said, “Roberta was his biggest supporter and the leader of his fan club. She was incredibly proud of him. His mommy loved him. He knew that.”
The source was sure to stress the fact that his mother “is a very strong woman.” Last week, a family friend even went as far to describe the woman as "spunky."
“She is all there, mentally, and is still going strong at 106. She outlived her 81-year-old son. That tells you a lot. But it’s a tough blow to bury your child,” said the family friend.

The insider explained that while Roberta did not travel to Arizona, where her son was receiving treatment, she was well aware of his declining health. “I can only imagine what she’s going through.”
“Johnny,” as his mother affectionately referred to him, lost his battle with glioblastoma shortly after his family made a statement announcing that he would stop treatment for the illness.
