Julia Roberts went on Busy Tonight on November 4 and answered a burning question from Busy Phillipps. Busy really wanted to know whether Julia’s infamous hairy armpits photo from the Notting Hill London premiere in 1999 was supposed to be a feminist statement. Scroll for more details.
Busy got straight to business and told Julia, “You rocked the hairy armpit at the Notting Hill premiere and you never really said if that was a statement. When I was a younger woman, I kind of took it as a statement.”
Busy continued, “I thought it was like really punk rock and cool.” She then asked Julia if it was meant to be taken that way or whether the star was just thinking, "I can’t shave my armpits this month.’”
Julia responded, “The picture is vivid in my mind actually, from that moment.”

The 51-year-old continued, “I think I just hadn’t really calculated my sleeve length and the waving, and how those two things would go together and reveal personal things about me.”
“So it wasn’t so much a statement as it’s just part of the statement I make as a human on the planet, for myself,” the Pretty Woman star shrugged.
