Lady Gaga attended the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s 3rd Annual Patron of The Artists Awards on Thursday night, November 8. While there she delivered a 23-minute acceptance speech about mental-health awareness and the necessity of the foundation for young artists. Scroll for more details.
Her A Star is Born co-star Sam Elliott introduced her to the stage before her speech. "She has this humanitarian bone in her body and she wants to make people feel better," he said in part. The “Born This Way” artist entered the stage in a blush pink corset dress with a long tulle skirt.
A deeply saddened Lady Gaga began her speech with, "We are losing a generation of young people who do not believe that their voices are worth hearing, that their pain has no end, and that their contributions are not valuable enough to move the needle in society and culture.”
She then shared a difficult to read statistic, "Today, one in four people experience mental health crisis. I am one of those people."

She revealed in her early years that she suffered with mental health due to always being a “yes” person, in fear that she couldn’t say no to each opportunity. "This later morphed into physical chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, panic attacks, acute trauma responses and debilitating mental spirals that have included suicidal ideation and masochistic behavior," she said.
The SAG-AFTRA foundation has aimed to provide assistance to performer programs as well as fund a children’s literacy program. Of their mission, she said, "I wish there had been a system in place to protect and guide me. A system in place to empower me to say no to things I felt I had to do. A system in place to empower to stay away from toxic working environments or working with people that were of seriously questionable character. There were days I struggled or couldn’t make it to work. I don’t want that for other artists or for anyone."
