All eyes were on Miley Cyrus at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday, August 26, when she performed her new song "Slide Away" for the first time on live television. She also debuted a new tattoo while on stage that was seemingly inspired by her split from soon-to-be ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
Miley, 26, sang her heart out in a little black dress, wet hair and layers of jewelry.
The VMA winner's new tattoo, done by LA-based tattoo artist Winter Stone, which is a lyric from The Pixies song called "The Thing," appeared on her left bicep.
"My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free," the tattoo read.
The quote appeared to be referencing her split from Liam, 29, after the former couple were only married for eight months. Her rep confirmed their breakup on Saturday, August 10.

The actor officially filed for divorce from her on Wednesday, August 21. Miley and Liam had an on-again, off-again relationship ever since they first met on the set of their film The Last Song in 2009.
Miley looks to have moved on in the love department with The Hills: New Beginnings castmate Kaitlynn Carter. The reality star was seen supporting her at the VMA's on Sunday.
Rumors swirled about the women dating after they posted several hot and heavy Instagram snaps from their Italian vacation earlier this month. They were also caught in a romantic lip lock during their time in the European country.
US Weekly broke the news about Kaitlynn, 30, and Brody Jenner's split on Friday, August 2. He has rebounded with Sports Illustrated model Josie Canseco.
