OK! Exclusive: The Costume Designer on The Mindy Project Shares His Fave Looks!

Dr. Mindy Lahiri of The Mindy Project has all the makings of an awesome best friend. She's very funny, she loves talking about boys, and she would probably let you borrow clothes from her enviable closet. Costume designer Salvador Perez chatted about his favorite looks from the show and the best parts of dressing Mindy Kaling.

Mindy's clothes tell a story: "She has a good life. It's very colorful, it's very put together. She takes care of herself."

What's the name for the Mindy Lahiri look? Salvador calls it "bright, eclectic New York chic."

Salvador's favorite outfit from season one was this bold look from her date with Seth Rogen: "I loved those colors on her."

"The things you could never get away with on normal television, I get away with on her!"

Salvador's favorite brands for Mindy include designers who have a good "color aesthetic," like Kate Spade, Ellen Tracy, C. Wonder, and Trina Turk (who designed dress).

"I love her in yellow or bright green. On anybody else, it would look ridiculous. On her, it's magical and rich!"

"She loves texture in her clothes. If there's a pattern on a pinafore, she won't wear it with a white blouse. We'll do a bright contrasting color. It just reads better on camera."

How will Mindy's look be updated for season two? "It changes slightly just because fashion changes. It's a different palette," says Salvador. "Last year it was dark jewel tones; this year it's bright jewel tones!"

As for that controversial season finale haircut (a wig in real life), Salvador was a fan. "I loved it! I was like, Please don't take it off. I made her wear it to press events because it was so cute."

The short hair changed up her styling a bit. "We did jeweled collars and things to accentuate it. You'll see a lot more open necklines, because we wanted to frame the haircut."

Aside from Mindy, Salvador's favorite character to dress is Jeremy. "I love a man in a suit, and Ed Weeks just wears a suit so beautifully."

One more update for season two—Mindy has majorly slimmed down.

"She's lost 15 lbs, as part of the storyline. She was in Haiti! She has this newfound confidence."
