An insider told OK! Magazine that because the Twilight hunk has chosen to take on small-scale indie projects in a bid to distance himself from his Edward Cullen image, he’s playing a bit of financial catch-up.

“Rob’s spending habits are the same now as they were when he was earning the big bucks, so there’s a real shortfall,” the source said.

Now, RPatz is “desperate” to land a major role but he may have lost some of his star power after 2012’s Cosmopolis and last year’s The Rover tanked in theaters.

“He’s not one who would typically sign on as the face of a cologne brand, because he’s really a simple guy and not into high-end fashion,” the source said. “But he knows it’s financially sound and, frankly, he needs the money.”
