Serena Williams proudly announced on Instagram on Tuesday, June 25, that she's the second black woman tennis player in history to get her own Wheaties cereal box. The icon was overjoyed by the honor, but some fans expressed their outrage that it hadn't happened sooner.
Serena, 37, took to social media to share her most recent accomplishment and paid tribute to the woman that came before her.
"In 2001, Wheaties paid homage to a true champion and an icon by putting her on the cover of a Wheaties Box. Althea Gibson was the FIRST Black Woman tennis player to be on the box. Today, I am honored to be the second," she wrote.
The athlete has dominated the sport for years, so some fans think the nod is long overdue.

"Why did this take so long?" one user wrote. "I can't believe it took Wheaties this long to put your image on the box. Regardless, it's great," another added.
The news comes on the heels of another big moment for Serena. She became the first athlete to make Forbes‘ World’s Richest Self-Made Women list on June 4.
She ranked number 80 on the list with an estimated fortune of $225 million. She made a whopping $29 million in total income just in the last year!
