Zooey Deschanel and husband Jacob Pechenik have decided to part ways after four years of marriage. The couple announced their decision to split on Friday, September 6.
"After much discussion and a long period of contemplation we have decided we are better off as friends, business partners and co-parents rather than life partners," Zooey and Jacob's statement read. "We remain committed to our business, our values and most of all our children. Thank you for respecting our privacy at this time."
Zooey, 39, and Jacob, 47, met on set of the Bill Murray comedy film Rock the Kasbah. The producer and the New Girl star confirmed their engagement in January 2015 and got married later that year. The couple share daughter Elsie, 4, and son Charlie, 2.
Zooey revealed to Us Weekly in September 2017 about how motherhood changed her life perspective. “Nothing can really prepare you for it because you never again have a day where you don’t think of your kids first. At least for me, that’s what I think of first thing. Like, ‘How are the kids doing? What do they need?’ That’s my first thought when I wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night. I’m always thinking of them.”
She also added that “you don’t realize what a sort of selfish existence you live in until you have kids.”
Jacob proposed on her birthday, January 17, and celebrated the joyous occasion on Catalina Island. Their nuptials took place in Austin on June 21.
The 500 Days of Summer actress converted to Judaism in order to marry the filmmaker.
But this not the first marriage for Zooey. She previously tied the knot with Death Cab For Cutie frontman, Ben Gibbard. Ben and Zoey married in 2009 and broke up in 2012.
