Tonight the second half of Melissa & Joey’s two-part summer finale airs tonight at 8/7c on ABC Family and series star Melissa Joan Hart promises fans will finally get what they’ve been waiting for…romance! The actress offers up some early dish on what to expect and, as a mom of three, shares how she survives the chaos of back to school time.
OK!: Lets talk summer finale—what are we in for?
Melissa Joan Hart: It’s going to be super exciting. Shooting it was the most fun we’ve had and we have a lot of fun on this show. We actually really want to spin it off into its own series. If you caught last week’s episode, I’m pretending to be Joe’s ex-wife, who was played by Megan Hilty, who was a busty, sort of trashy blonde. They take off to Jersey to convince Joe’s grandmother he’s still married while she’s on her death bed. His grandmother is played by Doris Roberts and his sister is played by Marissa Jaret Winokur, so it’s an amazing cast. Basically what all of the fans have been begging me for every week on the Internet will finally come to fruition. Things are going to progress really quickly and I think it will really leave the fans wanting more. We’re all excited about getting back to work in a few weeks and seeing where the writers take it.
OK!: Are you happy with the way things are headed for the characters?
MJH: Yeah, you know, it’s tricky because our whole chemistry on the show has been built up around the fact that we don’t like each other and we don’t have a romantic relationship. As we get closer to that romantic relationship, while the audience will be happy the romance is happening, the writers have the very difficult job of trying to keep people entertained with comedy. When you’re not romantically involved you can say things and do things that are pushing the limits a little bit more.
OK!: As a mom, how do you balance the craziness of back to school season?
MJH: Every day is a struggle. This week they had Monday off because of the holiday but then kindergarten starts tomorrow, then my other son has Thursday off, then my kindergartener has Friday off…it’s so confusing right now! But our family lives that way anyway because of our crazy, hectic bi-coastal schedule. The more chaos, the more it means I have to focus on the important things like getting meals done, getting them where they have to go, making sure everyone is picked up when they’re supposed to be. It really makes you rely on friends, too. I’m constantly emailing and texting friends, “When are we supposed to be here? Can you take them there? I’ll take yours.” We trade off in our town. We have a great group of moms in this town who really lean on each other and help each other out.
