Despite her pedigree as the daughter of actor and Oscar-winning director Ron Howard, Bryce Dallas Howard is no Hollywood wildchild.
Wanting to focus on her acting work, she settled down with fellow actor Seth Gabel at age 25 without taking the Hollywood party scene by storm.
How did the Twilight star, who is now working on Jurassic World, avoid falling prey to the trappings of fame?
“Well, my parents are great,” Bryce, 32, tells me this week during Canon’s Project Imaginat10n Film Festival. “I was raised in Connecticut. laughs That was part of it, although I am raising my children in Los Angeles, and I feel good about it. I feel like it’s a good place. I have no prejudice against Los Angeles, but I think during that time, in the ‘80s, the fact that they made that decision was one that they felt empowered by.”
Still, that’s not all. Her parents’ strong marriage was also a factor.
“My parents have been together since they were 16 years old,” she explains. “My dad is a very moral person, a very good person, and my mom Cheryl Howard is an intensely protective, fierce, hardcore warrior woman. It must not have been easy to raise four children inside the business with the kinds of career that my dad has, but they fought for their family, and theyalways prioritized us. And I’m grateful for that. They’re an incredible example for me as I raise my kids.”

Dad Ron couldn’t be more pleased with the adults his children—daughters Bryce, twins Jocelyn and Paige, 28, and son Reed, 25—have become.

“Well, they had a great mom to start, and a tough mom,” he says. “Family has always meant a great deal to me, but I grew up in a family that was loving, and there was also an expectation of mutual respect, a sense of responsibility and a standard of behavior to look up to. We tried to imbue them in our kids as well. We’re lucky. I’m proud of all four of them. I enjoy spending time with all of them when I get a chance.”
He also enjoys making time with the grandkids. What was the last thing they all did together?
“Oh, probably a trip to Big Bear, California. They’ve got a great zoo up there, it’s fun to take the kids there, and it’s a great day trip.”
In addition to making great films, being a grandparent is his passion.
“There’s something about participating in the cycles of life in such a vivid, present way,” he says. “It’s emotional, it’s profound and it happens all the time, but it’s a unique aspect that I don’t think Cheryl and I anticipated.”
