Outwardly they lead the most rarefied of lives, but back home in their 20-room apartment at London’s Kensington Palace, Prince William, 31, and Kate Middleton, 32, are much like any other young couple experiencing the joys and stresses of first-time parenthood. "The magic about George is that he’s a baby like everyone else’s," royals expert Christopher Wilson tells OK!.

The little prince’s nursery is cluttered with wooden cars and a train set. And while they do have a nanny, Kate and Wills are totally hands-on parents: She buys George onesies at the Gap and affordable London chain Trotters, while William handles late-night feedings so Mom can rest. "He's a night owl," the prince has said of his son, "at his most vocal around 3am."

With Kate’s help, fast-growing George has attempted his frst steps, and thanks to five new teeth, he’s begun eating solids, typically mashed potatoes and fresh veggies mixed with baby food. In fact, the future king now reportedly tips the scales at 24 pounds, prompting Wills to call him a “born rugby player.”

As for Kate, she’s cherishing these early months. "When she meets other mothers," Christopher says, "they talk about real things—the drama of childbirth, the bother of diapers, the loss of sleep—and how wonderful it is to be a mom. She and William are loving this time together."

George even overshadowed his glamorous mom as he debuted on the world stage April 7 in Wellington, New Zealand. He’s already bagged thousands of air miles, jetting with Kate to the Caribbean before heading Down Under. "It must bring a tear of satisfaction to the queen’s eyes," royals expert Christopher Wilson says. "She knows if people across the world fall in love with George, the baby, they’ll retain that afection for George, the king."

To be sure, George has plenty of a-list kids to bond with. "Victoria and David Beckham have introduced daughter Harper to George, and they get along brilliantly," says a source, adding that a few months ago the prince reportedly booked hang time with Beyoncé and Jay Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy, too. But George also plays with regular kids—as he did April 9 in Wellington, where he romped with a group of ten local babies. Scenes like that make for priceless PR. "Having George cuts away the layers of starchy formality that generally surround royals," says Christopher Wilson.
