Chris Rock‘s third hosting gig, in 2003. By then, everyone expected Chris to totally bring it—and as the most sought-after comedian in the world at the time, he definitely did.

Russell Brand mocks the Jonas Brothers, and everyone else, at the 2008 VMAs, calling President George W. Bush “that retarded cowboy fellow.” His promos with Britney Spears were also top notch:

Paul Reubens, soon after his arrest for masturbation in public, appears at the 1991 show in character as Pee-Wee Herman and innocently asks, “Heard any good jokes lately?”

Chelsea Handler and Lindsay Lohan battle it out backstage in 2011. Okay, it was slightly awkward, but it was a nice relief to laugh as Lindsay joked, “You think anyone wants to work with a drunk? Take it from me, they don’t!”

Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic smacks himself in the face with his own bass at the 1992 VMAs. I mean, he probably didn’t think it was funny, but we did.
