'American Idol' Recap: Las Vegas: Shocking Cuts from Johnny Keyser to Britnee Kellogg!
Feb. 17 2012, Published 1:55 p.m. ET
The 60 remaining finalists headed to Las Vegas last night on American Idol and had to get into groups again and sing songs from the 50s. This is a challenge in itself as none of the contestants were even born for decades after that era. Surprisingly, most of them did really well! Let's take a look at some of the standouts and how did they cut it down and end up with a Top 42?
David Leathers Jr./Jeremy Rosado/Ariel Sprague/Gabi Charruba: For young kids, this group did very with "Rockin' Robin." Jeremy doesn't blow us away, but they really melded together really well. Ariel especially blew us away. We haven't seen her much, but she can really hit those notes.
Adam Brock/Angie Zeiderman/Ericka Van Pelt/Shelby Tweten: This was a group made up so many different personailities and they used it to their advantage with their very energetic performance of "Great Balls of Fire." Especally with Adam starting it out on piano. But we just don't think Angie had as must vocal prowess as the others and sadly, she gets cut by episode end.
Reed Grimm/Elise Testone/Haley Johnson/Eben Franckewitz: It seems that wherever Reed goes, awesomeness follows. He may be quirky and goofy, but he really knows how to put together a number and lead his group to great success. Not sure how far the others will go, but Reed is going to fly through this competition if he keeps this up.

Jermaine Jones/Richie Law: Poor Richie, after he was not asked to be in a group again with Phillip and Heejun, he had to go off on his own. But it seems to work out for him to pair up with such a fellow low voice. Something about Richie rubs you the wrong way, but they were able to make their performance work.

Creighton Fraker/Aaron Marcellus/Nick Boddington/Jen Hirsh: They rocked it as "Group Sauce" on Wednesday night but now without Reed. How will they do? They sure didn't need Reed when they have a voice like Jen's. They were still one of the best groups out there. But sadly, Nick was cut.
Phillip Phillips/Heejun Han/Jairon Jackson/Neco Starr: They have replaced Richie with Neco and they are so much better off for it. They put on a powerful performance of "I Only Have Eyes For You" and killed it. All sailed through to next round and Heejun was so emotional over it that he couldn't stop crying! Awww! We love him.
But when it came down to it, they had kept too many contestants and this is when it got really sad. More needed to be cut. Amongst them were Gabi, Jairon, Britnee Kellogg and the most shocking of all: Johnny Keyser. He had gotten so much TV time, had the look and the voice. Maybe his group just spent too much time hanging out in the hot tub in Las Vegas.
