So far on Smash, Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty) have only had to compete with each other — but that's all about to change! The second season will bring in vocal powerhouse and nearly-impossible-to-not-like Jennifer Hudson for a multi-episode arc as Veronica Moore, a character who has already achieved her Broadway dreams, but has paid a very dear price for them.

“This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment.
We agree! Jennifer has already conquered movies, snagging an Oscar for her role in Dreamgirls, and music, with a Grammy for her self-titled debut album. Will her work on Smash give her the trifecta? More importantly, will the material on Smash be up to snuff with viewers (let alone the awards committee)?

“First Dreamgirls, now Smash. I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC," Steven Spielberg said.
New showrunner Josh Safran has already made some favorable cuts (Jaime Cepero, Ellis and Raza Jaffrey, Dev), and the addition of a new character brought to life by Jennifer seems like yet another step in the right direction!
