Bret Michaels survived a brain hemorrhage this year and is now prepping to survive the premiere of his new VH1 reality show, Life as I Know It, that follows his relationship with girlfriend Kristi Gibson and daughters Raine and Joria.

Life as I Know It premieres tonight on VH1 at 10 p.m. and Bret tells TV Guide, "The whole idea of this show is my struggle to find a balance between my love of family and my love for music."

"You'll see my true effort to be a really good dad and the relationship that Kristi and I have," he added. "We have a great love and respect for each other, but as the song says, "Loving a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be."

And his relationship with Kristi is progressing — they even live together!

"We do now," Bret said of whether he lives with Kristi. "Obviously, when I was doing Rock of Love, we were officially apart at that point! Laughs But we always find our way back to each other."

Bret's two children are also a big part of the show, which did cause Bret to have some reservations.

"For sure. But I'm the executive producer and I go out of my way to protect them," Bret explained. "I told the kids, 'Be yourself, have fun and do what you want to do. Just be who we are.' "

And the same goes for Bret!

Even though he is looking forward to the future and his new show, he's still recovering from his health scare earlier this year.

"If before the brain hemorrhage I was 100 percent, then I'd say I'm running at 75 to 80 percent now," he explained. "I think that after I have the operation to close a hole in my heart in January, I'll feel a lot better."
