Rep. Christopher Lee has resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives. The Republican congressman served the 26th District of New York and after a report outing his unfaithful antics on Craigslist went viral, the married man and father announced his resignation.
Gawker first reported Lee’s affinity to perusing Craiglist’s “Women Seeking Men” forum.
His bio on the page includes details like he’s a divorced “lobbyist” and “fit fun classy guy,” along with a younger age.
A single 34-year-old woman shared her story with Gawker about being approached by Lee in cyberspace.
Her ad in the “Women for Men” section of the Craigslist personals asked,”Will someone prove to me not all CL men look like toads?” She also posted she was looking for men who were “financially & emotionally secure” to reply.
And Lee replied soon after — sending shirtless pics — using his Gmail account (fatal mistake) that he has since confirmed to be his own. According to Gawker it’s also the same Gmail account that was associated with Lee’s personal Facebook account, which has since been deleted.
Three hours after the story broke of his Craiglist antics, Lee announced his resignation on his Web site.
“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of Western New York. I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek their forgiveness.”
“The challenges we face in Western New York and across the country are too serious for me to allow this distraction to continue, and so I am announcing that I have resigned my seat in Congress effective immediately.”
