Shaun White is one of the most famous athletes representing the United States at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. That's why it's super disappointing that he has announced he's dropping out of the slopestyle event just days before the Winter Olympics are set to begin.

Shaun White announced on the Today show this morning that he is withdrawing from slopestyle, a brand-new snowboarding event for the Olympics. "After much deliberation with my team, I have made the decision to focus solely on trying to bring home the third straight gold medal in halfpipe for Team USA," he said in a statement. Shaun won the gold for halfpipe at Vancouver in 2010 and Turin in 2006. If he wins this year, he'd be the first American man to win gold in three consecutive Winter Olympics.

While the new slopestyle event is very exciting and Shaun could have potentially won that one, too, there have been concerns that the course is not safe. He explained in his statement that it's not worth the risk of injury for him to compete in this one.
