Laughing and holding hands on the ice, Corey Simms and Leah Messer looked like a regular young couple in love on their Jan. 15 date night at the South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena in West Virginia. But, as Teen Mom fans know, the road to happiness has been anything but smooth for Leah, 18, and Corey, 20. Over the past two years, they have struggled with Leah’s high-risk unplanned pregnancy, the December 2009 birth of their twins, Alianna and Aleeah, and Leah’s subsequent fling with ex-boyfriend Robbie Kidd.

After Leah’s plea to Corey to take her back looked like too little too late on the season premiere of MTV’s new season of Teen Mom, pals of the couple tell OK! Corey suddenly decided to give Leah a second chance, by making her his wife in an emotional wedding ceremony on Oct. 17.

“Corey loves her for real,” a friend of the couple tells OK!. “He loves his girls, he loves being a dad.” The pal says Corey is committed to providing for his young family. “If they’re married, Leah and the girls will get his benefits,” the friend explains. (He works for the local water and sewage company.) Meanwhile, Leah’s ex is out of the picture. “Robbie has backed off,” says a second pal. “It’s over.”
