They’ve been divorced for longer than they were married, but there’s a battle of the exes still brewing between Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey — especially since he and current wife Vanessa Minnillo just announced that they are having a baby.

Nick and Vanessa won the race to the altar when they were married this past year, but Jessica had hoped to have the spotlight all to herself when her baby girl with fiancé Eric Johnson is born this spring. The singer and Fashion Star judge is irked that since Vanessa’s pregnancy was announced, she’s been asked too many questions about show she feels about Nick starting a family, too.

“Even though she’s happy with Eric, there’s a part of her that will always feel this sense of ownership over Nick because he was her first love,” says an insider. “She knows it’s immature, and it’s not something she’s proud of, but it is something she’s talked about with her friends. She just can’t seem to get over the whole competitive thing with Vanessa. It irritates her that he ended up with Vanessa of all people.”

As for Vanessa, she continues to insist that she’s not threatened by Nick’s previous marriage. “The past is the past,” she has said.

The timing of the pregnancy may be nothing more than a coincidence. “Vanessa’s just so overjoyed to be expecting; it’s something she's been wanting for years,” says the insider. “The last thing on her mind is Jessica.”
