Jury Finds Elizabeth Smart's Kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, Guilty

After a five-week trial, the federal jury has convicted Brian David Mitchell of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart over eight years ago.

On Friday, the Associated Press reports the verdict was finally reached on Elizabeth's abduction case.
When Elizabeth was 14 years old, she was taken from her home at knifepoint by Mitchell, a former street preacher, and held captive for nine months.
Elizabeth, now 23 years old, testified during the trial that she was forced into a polygamous marriage and suffered nearly daily rapes.

Mitchell was found guilty of kidnapping and unlawful transportation of a minor across state lines for the purposes of illegal sex by the jury.
He had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. The maximum penalty for each charge is life in prison.
