Marshall Grant, who played in Johnny Cash's original trio dating back to the 1950's, has died. He was 83.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Marshall died on Sunday in a hospital in Jonesboro, Ark. Ironically, he was in Jonesboro for a Johnny Cash Musical to raise funds to restore the home Johnny grew up in.
Roseanne Cash told the newspaper, "Marshall was supposed to give a speech, even play his bass on one song." Last Wednesday afternoon he played in the rehearsal but was hospitalized that night with an aneurism.
"I loved him so much — he treated me like a daughter," she said. In fact, Marshall called her almost every month to dish about "the old stories."
The old stories comprised his bass playing with Johnny for over two decades. Plus, he was Johnny's manager from 1954 until 1980 and played on hits "Ring of Fire," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk the Line."
