Meryl Streep, Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks and Billy Crystal Spread Condolences for Nora Ephron

Upon hearing the news that author and filmmaker Nora Ephron lost her fight with leukemia last night at 71, Hollywood's best and brightest released respectful and mournful statements about her life and work.

Billy Crystal, who played Harry in the 1989 classic When Harry Met Sally..., written by Nora, said he was "very sad" to learn of her passing, as she was "a brilliant writer and humorist... Being her Harry to Meg's Ryan Sally will always have a special place in my heart. I was very lucky to get to say her words."

Meg — the unofficial Nora Ephron poster girl who starred in When Harry Met Sally..., Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail — called her "an era."

"We pictured ourselves inside her dreams and they became ours. All wisdom, wit and sparkle lights, what a treat she was, what a blessing," she said. "I marvel again and again, what a life...to have created a simple happiness in people, to have added to the sum of delight in the world."

Meryl Streep, who starred in Silkwood, Heartburn and Julie & Julia, remembered Nora's sense of "fun," saying you could "call on her for anything: doctors, restaurants, recipes, speeches, or just a few jokes, and we all did it, constantly. She was an expert in all the departments of living well."

Tom Hanks, who was the star in both Sleepless and You've Got Mail, remembered how she "lifted us all with wisdom and wit mixed with love for us and love for life."

Nora wrote, directed and produced 15 films and is a triple Oscar nominee for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) for Silkwood, When Harry Met Sally... and Sleepless in Seattle. She is also the author of five essay collections, including the best-seller I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being A Woman.

R.I.P., Nora.
