It's awards season, of course, and while most of the buzz surrounds the Oscars next Sunday, let's not forget about the Writers Guild Awards! Although the ceremony wasn't broadcast on TV, the L.A. and NYC ceremonies were held simultaneously last night.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, as West Coast co-host Zooey Deschanel greeted the audience, she said, "Hi, and welcome to nerd prom." She added, "Male writers: You are all hot because of your minds." To which point co-host Joel McHale chimed in, "Enough. You had them at eye contact."
While Zooey and Joel ran the show out west, Saturday Night Live alum Rachel Dratch had everyone in stitches in NYC, including an opening musical number with none other than fellow SNL alum Jimmy Fallon! Modern Family won the best comedy series prize, just as it swept the Emmys. As for TV drama, the top honor went to Breaking Bad.
Not to be overlooked, however was the motion picture category. Woody Allen won best original screenplay for Midnight in Paris, and Alexander Payne took home top honors for best adapted screenplay with The Descendants. Perhaps they'll also earn those coveted Academy Awards next Sunday night?
