Long before Sasha Fierce stormed the stage, it was just Beyonce Knowles, a musically-gifted 13-year-old. The above yearbook photo of the future superstar was shot when she was attending the 8th grade at Welch Middle School in Houston, Texas.

The next year, Beyonce sat for the below yearbook picture during her freshman year at Houston School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Even though the picture, shot in 1996, is nearly two decades old, Beyonce's trademark bright smile and happy personality are already on full display in the black and white photo.

She would have even more reason to smile later that same year. She and her childhood friend, Kelly Rowland, changed the name of their group from Girl's Thyme to Destiny's Child and scored their first major contract with Columbia Records.
