Paul McCartney's 9/11 Documentary to Air on Showtime: 'Music Can Really Be Very Healing'

Paul McCartney's post-9/11 benefit concert documentary, The Love We Make: Paul McCartney and the Concert for New York City, will air this September on Showtime. The film, directed by Albert Maysles, shows Paul's planning for his huge concert after the tragedy.

"Out of the window of the jet," Paul recalled to reporters via satellite while discussing the documentary (via USA Today), "you could see the Twin Towers."

The singer was sitting in a plane on the tarmac at JFK on 9/11 when the attacks happened and he thought at first it was "an optical illusion."

"I ended up not being able to go into New York," he said. "I ended up in Long Island, in a hotel, watching it on TV, like the rest of the world."

And then he decided he needed to put on a concert.

"There was fear in the air, and I had never experienced that, particularly in New York," Paul explained. "This is where the idea of putting on a show came about … I thought maybe I'd be able to help America and New York out of this fearfulness."

Music was the answer.

"I've come to the conclusion that it's magical ... It hits your emotions, and it's global; language doesn't matter ... More than words, more than speeches, more than comedy, which are all very important, music has some property that can really be very healing."
