'Project Runway' Recap: Candy Couture

It's the unconventional materials challenge! Our favorite!
Heidi Klum, making plaid look sexy, gathers the designers and says, "As you are learning, we have high expectations here at Project Runway. This is not season 6 no time for child's play." Heidi sends them to Dylan's Candy Bar, where Dylan Lauren (daughter of Ralph) and Tim Gunn await. They are given $250, a 50 percent discount and 30 minutes to shop. As usual with these challenges, some of the designers show us they are super ambitious, saying they don't even want to use muslin to construct their garment, while others head straight for the fabric in the room — the T-shirts, the pillows, the umbrellas — even though Tim advises against it. Tim, by the way, is fascinated by the candy LEGOS. "You can build with them!" he says. Oh, Tim. We would build a whole candy LEGO village with you, at a moment's notice.
Back in the workroom, everyone surveys their competition's material. "Tim said you can use anything, but why would you use fabric?" says Kooan Kosuke. Word, man. Except we would probaby use fabric before using cotton candy, or anything that, you know... melts. Kooan was making what looked like kind of a cool oversize T-shirt that Heidi would like, but then he lost his mind and just threw a bunch of crap on it. One piece reminded us of intestines, and no one ever wants to be reminded of intestines. Just when we thought maybe we'd judged him too quickly....
We hate to interrupt this recap, but can we take a quick detour and just ask: What is Gunnar Deatherage's problem? "I think Christopher Palu is threatened by me," he says. For real, all Christopher has done is work, win challenges and play with Buffi.
"I feel like I'm the nice twin and he's the evil twin," Christopher says. We agree! #NiceTwinChristopher!

Anyway, there is a lot of good work going on in this room. We are particularly excited about Sonjia Williams and Ven Budhu, and worried about Andrea Katz. Although we love her idea of a Victorian candy shop (shoppe?) clerk's apron, Tim is right when he says it's just pages of candy dots sewn together. We're also not sure what's going through Alicia Hardesty's mind when she says she's making Christmas overalls that will be trimmed in something that looks like "dirt" and "earth." Spoiler alert! She ditches the dirt and her outfit doesn't turn out bad.

Buffi Jashanmal gets violent with an umbrella, and Ven tells us that he feels her being "loud and obnoxious" is "unnecessary." He tells us this in the same tone of voice he uses when he tells us he won all of the awards when he graduated from FIT, which had never happened before in the school's history. Does anyone else find Ven's monotone pretty amusing? "I'm here on Project Runway to win," he says, without much passion. And yet, we're convinced.
On the runway. This was a great show, and we liked how everyone repurposed candy, except for Lantie Foster, who repurposed umbrellas. At the top, the judges had Ven, Sonjia and Gunnar, who back in the workroom told Tim he was making a "kind of dress." What he made was an actual dress, no "kind of" about it. Terrible description aside, we liked it, particularly the peplum. Our personal favorite was Sonjia, whose aquatic-themed dress was constructed perfectly and used the most variety of candies, and we especially loved her use of gummy sharks. We also thought her dress best represented the spirit of the challenge. The win went to Ven, however, and we're happy with that. His dress, inspired by stained-glass windows, was made well and was the most wearable design of the bunch.

In the bottom, we had Buffi, whose outfit Michael Kors rightfully proclaimed as more "Toddlers and Tiaras" than Carrie Bradshaw." We thought Buffi embraced the challenge though, and we like pink, okay? Sorry. "Buffi just makes me want to cover my eyes," he said. Ouch. Then there was Elena Slivnyak, who made a structured nude dress out of pina colada licorice. This was a literal case of adding insult to injury: she had previously burned herself so badly with the hot glue gun that she needed medical attention. We do not agree with the judges' assessment that Elena is arrogant, though. All she did was stand by her design and not make any excuses. Unlike Lantie, our third bottom designer, who blamed the time constraints for what she made. Nina Garcia had had enough of Lantie; she shot down every single excuse she had. It was pretty awesome. Lantie also cut rain boots down to be booties, which she thought was genius. It was a cute idea but they looked sloppy and came nowhere near making up for the fact that she didn't rise to the challenge. She was auf'd.
We also want to mention that we really liked Dmitry Sholokhov's design, but we understood why, given the guidelines of the challenge, he wasn't in the top. Still, that fringe he created was terrific, and that zipper in the back was super sexy. We predict a challenge win for him very soon.
