"I initially met her on the Paramount lot when I was hosting the MTV Awards," Russel began his proposal story on Live with Regis and Kelly. "There was a segment where for a movie I was making called Get Me to the Greek. There was a brief moment where I had to pretend to kiss her and instead of pretending to kiss her, Regis, I actually kissed her. Although that’s not proper acting, it’s much more arousing."
"Twelve months passed, seasons came and went and yet, within it, a furnace of passionate intensity blazed," he explained, but then they met again!

"I hosted the MTV Awards again, just to see her. This time, while rehearsing in famous Radio City Hall I was there showing off to impress some friends of mine, running through my lines, I was hosting the show again, I had to show confidence so that everyone would believe in me. Arcing across Radio City Hall came a water bottle half full or half empty, depending on your perspective, struck me on the crown of my human head where I do all my thinking," he laughed. "I need that to make all my decisions, working, my fingertips, that’s the basis of it all. I looked in the direction from where the bottle came and there was Katy Perry."
"From that moment, I felt either very much in love or concussed, possibly both," Russell shared, which led him to the proposal.

"I had to host the award show that night, then I had to see her for a couple of weeks. I had to go into the Angola prison in Louisiana to spend some time there with the inmates to learn what makes them tick—it’s crime. Katy and I went on a holiday together—she was going to go on holiday with one of her mates. Her mate canceled so I went off on this holiday to Thailand. We spent hardly any time together and then suddenly on a 17-hour flight and suddenly on a holiday."
"I didn’t think that I’d propose to her there and then but I knew I was feeling peculiar sensations. Love is the recognition I think — there’s something that’s unified and the same within us all. Briefly, I felt a love, a connection, a powerful love."

And a love that was different from his long list of women in the past!
"I think she’s very funny and peculiar. She has odd idiosyncracies," Russell said if Katy. "She’s engaging and also, she was very sort of controlling. Normally, you can get your own way. I find it hard to say no. Also, look, we had these tattoos done raises his right bicep—this is Sanskrit. In Sanskrit, it says, “go with the flow.”

Which is exactly what Russell had to do during his proposal!
"The furnace blazes unabated," he continued. "We’re there in Thailand for awhile; it was wonderful. I knew then that I loved her. We spent some time dating intertimentently because of our various commitments professionally then we went to India for a holiday and once in India, on New Year’s Eve, there was to be a blue moon. That seldom happens — that’s why there’s that phrase, 'once in a blue moon.'"

"Then on New Year’s Eve, at midnight, I’d organized all sorts of things to make it authentic and wonderful. There were gentlemen wearing turbans, holding blazing torches. The blue moon lit the sky. An elephant arrived at midnight wearing makeup. It looked a bit tarty, not an elephant who was going to lie down for anyone, it had an attitude. When we mounted the elephant, it was my plan to ask her to marry me on the back of this elephant at midnight but the thing is, at midnight lots of times there are fireworks. He had an attitude anyway," Russell explained.
"Thankfully, he maintained control of his functions, in a gastric fashion but still did that thing, aaaaah mimics roar, like in Dumbo, really carried on. So I said, it’s probably best not to —t his is no way to start a marriage at the the top of a big grey fleshy storm so what I did is — we got off and entered an area where there was a fountain, flowers were scattered everywhere, the moon shone on."

In the end, it was the perfect setting for a proposal!
"She sat down, it’s quiet. The elephant ran off at that point, like it knew it had been bad. I went onto one knee; it was filled with incredible gravitas. You sort of feel like—it’s strange when life becomes intense and serious like that; it was very very magical," Russell shared. "Me, I’m normally not at a loss for words. In that moment, I spoke quietly, asked her to marry me and she said yes. It was very sort of sweet and tender, very small and perfect. And as a result, we are to be wed."
And live happily ever after!
