Amy, 27, struggled with alcohol and drug abuse, and Russell wrote in his tribute letter that they "shared an affliction, the disease of addiction."
In his letter, Russell detailed how he admired Amy for her singing abilities. He ultimately called her a genius. But he also said he hopes her death can create change in the way society treats addiction.
"We need to review the way society treats addicts, not as criminals but as sick people in need of care," he wrote. "We need to look at the way our government funds rehabilitation."

Russell's wife, Katy, was very proud of Russell's letter and how he has been able to stay sober for almost nine years.
"Very poignant, hubby," she Tweeted, and she also spoke to Good Morning America about Amy's death.
"My heart felt really sad," she said. "My husband, who's been clean and sober for almost nine years, you know, I — I see him working a program and working on himself every single day. And I see how much work it takes to be clean and sober when you have, you know, addiction on your hands. So… it gave me a real — a gratefulness for my husband, who got clean when he was 27. And I feel really sad and I just hope she finds peace."
