To commemorate W magazine's 40th anniversary, the magazine dressed up four of today's hottest stars: Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightley, Mia Wasikowska and Rooney Mara in the clothes of each four decades.

Rooney Mara with her striking cheekbones brought the 1970s to life with a page boy haircut and velvet maroon hat. The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo actress told the magazine her favorite movie of the era is Ryan and Tatum O'Neal's Paper Moon.

"I saw it only last year. David Fincher made me watch it, and I think I’ve seen it five times since then… I love that ending—it’s not too happy-happy," she said.

Meanwhile, Mia Wasikowska was barely recognizable as an 80s-era punk, with Annie Lennox-orange hair and rainbow-colored hoop earrings.

"Madonna is the real 80s icon. She’s wholly her own person," the actress said.

Recently single Scarlett Johannson looked every bit 90s grunge/goth (and a touch Elvira?) with two-tone locks and bulky nose ring. The Hitchcock actress told the magazine her favorite actor of the time was comedian Chris Farley.

"I thought he was hilarious. Growing up, I used to watch Saturday Night Live just to see him. He threw his whole body into the parts he played: He’d become red and sweaty and frantic. When he died, it was really significant for me.”

Last but not least, Keira Knightly represented the 2000s with slicked back platinum blond hair and minimal accessories.

Breaking: celebs have insecurities, too.

“I think skinny jeans and micro-miniskirts are very unfriendly," she quipped. "I’ve been known to wear both, but on some days it seems like they were invented to make you feel bad about yourself.”
