Former Extra host Maria Menounos has a plate full of new responsibilities at E!, but she took time out to open up to SHAPE about her top rules for healthy living in the magazine's September issue.

“My goal is to be healthy, not skinny—and the best way to achieve that is to not diet,” she tells the magazine. “The moment you cave and have something you’re not supposed to eat, you’ll want to quit the whole plan.”

Menounos, a vegetarian, also reveals that a meatless diet has her feeling better than ever. “I have more energy and I’m much happier—I never would have expected that!” she admits. Getting a good night’s sleep is paramount to a well-rounded lifestyle, says Menounos, who also recommends wearing a fit-tracker and trying to approach health as a journey.

But in addition to her secrets to staying camera-ready, happy and fulfilled, the TV journalist and best-selling author also reveals to SHAPE a big personal secret. “For years I was terrified of having kids,” Menounos, 36, admits. “I was afraid I’d love them so much, I’d stop working completely.”
