Dolly Parton's success as a singer, songwriter, actress and businesswoman helped her build a remarkable multimillion-dollar net worth.

The country music icon and philanthropist, whose signature songs include "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You," died on August 25 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 80.

According to her recently updated Celebrity Net Worth page, Parton had an estimated net worth of $650 million at the time of her death.

Meanwhile, Forbes' latest estimate, published in June 2025, placed her fortune at $450 million, with the bulk of her wealth tied to her stake in Dollywood.

Although Parton was raised in poverty as one of 12 children, she often credited her loving family with giving her the encouragement she needed to pursue music.

Her career took off after she moved to Nashville, where she signed with Monument Records in 1965 and later secured a songwriting deal with Combine Music. She released her debut album, Hello, I'm Dolly, before scoring her first No. 1 country single with "Joshua" in 1971.

Parton went on to release a string of enduring hits, including "I Will Always Love You," "My Tennessee Mountain Home," "Jolene" and "Coat of Many Colors," among others.

As her music career flourished, she expanded into acting, making her major film debut in 1980's 9 to 5. She then appeared in Steel Magnolias, Straight Talk, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone and Joyful Noise.

Additionally, a significant portion of Parton's fortune came from her sprawling business empire, which included media production, publishing, merchandise and theme parks. Her seven-decade career also encompassed touring, books and other ventures that further cemented her status as an entertainment icon.

"I would like to be a superstar. I guess all people dream of that. So in order to be a superstar you can't be just a superstar in one area," she shared in a 1977 interview. "That means to you have to appeal to a majority of people, and that's what I'm trying to do."

Parton made giving back a priority throughout her career, donating millions of dollars to causes centered on children, literacy, education, healthcare and her Tennessee community.

In 1988, she founded The Dollywood Foundation, which, according to her official website, "super-served the people of East Tennessee by providing scholarships to keep students in school." She soon launched the Imagination Library in 1995, which has since distributed more than 300 million free books to children from birth to age 5.

Parton also stepped up in times of crisis. After the 2016 Great Smoky Mountains wildfires, she created the My People Fund to support families who lost their homes and provide scholarships for affected students.

Parton is survived by six of her 11 siblings: Willadeene, Robert Jr. (Bobby), Stella, Cassie, Freida and Rachel. She had no children with her late husband, Carl Dean.

It remains unclear who will inherit Parton's fortune or whether she left a will, though she previously emphasized the importance of having one in place.

"I would not want to leave that mess to somebody else," she told Billboard. "A word to all the other artists out there: If you haven't made those provisions, do that. You don't want to leave that mess to your family for people to have to fight over. You need to take care of that yourself, even if it's a pain in the a-- – and it is."
