Donald Trump Causes International Incident With ‘Completely Inappropriate’ Truth Social Post as Iceland Summons U.S. Ambassador After President Threatens Takeover

President Donald Trump's penchant for posting AI-generated nonsense has dragged the United States into yet another international incident, as Iceland is now slamming the president for his "completely inappropriate" posting.

Amid a concerning deluge of unhinged posts, the 80-year-old president of the United States shared a map depicting much of North America and the surrounding region draped in the American flag, including Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Greenland. Iceland, which has largely avoided Trump's ire, was also colored in the red, white and blue.

The post grabbed Iceland's attention.

Iceland’s foreign minister, Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir, demanded that America's ambassador to Iceland, Billy Long, answer for the "completely inappropriate" post.

“There is nothing funny or normal about making fun of the sovereignty of states,” the minister told repoters on September 8. “If this is supposed to be a joke, then it is a bad joke.”

In numerous statements and AI-generated Truth Social posts, Trump has threatened to annex countries, including Canada and Venezuela, as well as Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark.

The new post comes amid Trump renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America" by executive order, echoing his earlier move to rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America." It was also part of the same weekend posting spree in which Trump shared an image depicting New Mexico as "New America."

Iceland has largely remained off Trump's radar, though Ambassador Long, a former Republican congressman, once joked that he could become the country's governor if the island nation were ever made a U.S. state. Long later apologized for the remark.

It's unclear why Trump made the post. His adoring aide Natalie Harp is partially responsible for crafting his social media presence, getting Trump to approve posts beforehand. For example, she approved controversial posts such as multiple pictures depicting Trump as Jesus Christ and another extremely racist video denigrating the Obamas.

Harp and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino are named in a lawsuit over the president's scheme to charge $100,000 for early access to his Truth Social posts. A suit filed by The Intercept and the Freedom of the Press Foundation describes Harp and Scavino as the architects of Trump's social media feed.

Though Trump has never threatened to annex Iceland before, he has on numerous occasions mixed up Iceland and Greenland in public remarks.

During his January speech at the World Economic Forum, Trump confused the two countries while slamming NATO.

“I know we’d be there for them. I don’t know that they’d be there for us with all of the money we expend, with all of the blood, sweat and tears… They’re not there for us on Iceland, I can tell you,” he said. “Their stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland’s already cost us a lot of money.”
