A Blue Rodeo concert became the latest flashpoint in Trump's "Lake America" saga, after 16,000 fans in Toronto drowned out the president's rebrand with a chant of their own.
Canadian rock band Blue Rodeo played Toronto's RBC Amphitheater on August 29, a venue that sits directly on the Lake Ontario waterfront. Before launching into their 1993 hit "Hasn't Hit Me Yet," which name-checks the lake, frontman Greg Keelor addressed the crowd.
A Lakeside Singalong Goes Viral
The audience rejected Donald Trump’s controversial ‘Lake America’ rebrand.
"It's become a little controversial,” Keelor said, “I would just like you to sing tonight with full authority and ownership."
The audience roared back "Lake Ontario" throughout the song, while screens behind the band displayed a map still labeled with the lake's original name.
"That was chilling, folks,” band member Jim Cuddy said afterward. “We are who we are, right? F--- 'em."
‘Something Out of Saturday Night Live’
Ontario Premier Doug Ford mocked Donald Trump’s executive order as something out of ‘Saturday Night Live.’
The concert wasn't the only Canadian jab landing that weekend.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford appeared on ABC's This Week and called Trump's renaming executive order "absolutely backward," adding: "It was something out of Saturday Night Live when he signed documents saying change it to Lake America. No one is going to call it Lake America."
Ford had already erected a lakeside sign declaring "Lake Ontario Now and Always," and has previously called Trump a "loser," a "dictator" and a "bully," even saying he'd "cut off their energy, with a smile on my face" if the U.S. pushed Ontario too far.
Prime Minister Mark Carney also weighed in, writing on X that the lake's name "dates well before the Canadian Confederation and the Declaration of Independence."

Donald Trump's Hours-Long Meltdown
Donald Trump responded with a lengthy Truth Social post targeting Canada’s auto industry.
Trump didn't take the mockery quietly. After sharing a screengrab of Google Maps' "Lake America" label, he spent much of August 30 ranting on Truth Social about Canada's auto industry, writing: "I don't want Canadian cars, I don't want Canadian parts, I don't want Canadian anything... I find Canada to be the worst. They are entitled no longer!"
The president urged Canadian companies to move operations to the United States.
He later urged Canadian companies to relocate to the U.S. to dodge tariffs, then claimed hours later that businesses were "lining up" to move.
Not everyone is convinced. Michigan-based General Motors has instead committed more than C$1 billion to its Canadian operations, including a next-generation GMC Sierra line at its Oshawa plant.
