On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver severely criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over his handling of a growing humanitarian and mental health crisis aboard U.S. Navy ships, characterizing the situation as a "floating nightmare.”
The segment highlighted the alarming conditions facing sailors deployed at sea, specifically referencing families of service members aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Boxer.
According to family member reports, sailors have endured horrific conditions including dwindling supplies and inadequate food resources; broken infrastructure, including a severe lack of working toilets; hygiene and maintenance failures that have crippled shipboard morale; and a severe mental health crisis, highlighted by reports that multiple sailors attempted to throw themselves overboard from the USS Abraham Lincoln while deployed in the Middle East.
'That's Not Good'

John Oliver joked that the situation sounds like a plot on 'American Horror Story.'
Oliver ridiculed Hegseth, a former Fox News weekend host, for what he described as a complete dismissal of the severity of the crisis.
Oliver noted that the administration's defensive statements have been "not reassuring" in the wake of emerging horror stories.
“Well, that’s not good,” Oliver said. “You never want to be in a position where you describe your job as a scene out of American Horror Story.”
'A Floating Nightmare'

Pete Hegseth dismissed the claims by saying, 'What they do in those high seas in those austere conditions with less port calls — it's incredible.'
“Honestly, if you absolutely have to choose a Ryan Murphy show for your workplace to resemble, the obvious answer is All’s Fair,” he continued. “Kim Kardashian, Niecy Nash-Betts, Teyana Taylor, Naomi Watts, Sarah Paulson, and Glenn Close in different shades of magenta suits."
The late-night host called out Hegseth's deflection tactics, specifically pointing to comments where Hegseth brushed off the conditions to reporters by saying, "Some deployments are longer than others... What they do in those high seas in those austere conditions with less port calls — it's incredible."
“Yeah, that’s the Ryan Murphy production you’re going to want to be stuck in, not this floating nightmare,” Oliver said.

The comedian criticized Pete Hegseth's response.
Oliver mocked this rhetoric as an inadequate and minimizing response to an active mental health and resource emergency affecting American sailors.
“Now, Pete Hegseth has claimed that the ship’s conditions are being completely misrepresented by those who are actually experiencing them, saying, ‘We make sure that every ship, every crew, every captain has everything we can provide at every single moment. And if he means to go certifiably insane, I’m inclined to agree with him there," the British star joked.

Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump denied reports that sailors on navy ships are subjected to terrible conditions.
The crisis has quickly moved beyond late-night satire, drawing significant scrutiny in Washington, D.C.
Democrats, led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal, sent a formal letter demanding answers directly from Hegseth and acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao.
Despite documented outcries from military families, President Donald Trump flatly denied the reports to media outlets, claiming families are not worried about their loved ones at sea.
