John Stamos got candid about what he was thinking about after his 2015 DUI arrest, which ultimately led him to get help.

On Monday, October 23, the Full House star, 60, spoke to Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Lara Spencer on Good Morning America about writing his new memoir, If You Would Have Told Me.

"Thank you for not holding back," Roberts began. "In the first chapter you write about your DUI in 2015 that led to you going to rehab. You said at that time that you'd be OK...." to which the actor replied, "Dying!"

"I didn't want to kill myself, but in my stupid foggy head I said, 'Well, if I die, it's OK, I've done everything ... I've got a sitcom, I've played with The Beach Boys...' what a fool," he continued. "No, it was hard. I set out to write a hero's story, I was like, 'I did this, I did that'... and it turned into a human story. Without truth, it's paralysis I think."

From early on, Stamos realized he had to switch gears and tell his side of the story when putting pen to paper. "I started to read it. I was like, this is bull. That's not real. Why do it, I guess, is the thing? It's also a love letter to all the beautiful people that have been in and out of my life. I wanted to highlight that," he noted of the experience.

Stamos recalled how that moment changed his life forever.

"I had to sober up. I was just drinking too much," he told People. "I just went low. I didn't go high. I just surrounded myself with people I shouldn't have been with."

"I had that DUI and I was like, 'I can't do this. I've got to straighten up,'" he recalled. "That's when I was confusing the universe because I'm not a bad person, but I was doing c------ things."

The handsome hunk, who is married to Caitlin McHugh, also never wants to think about sitting in handcuffs minutes after his arrest.

"It's hard for a lot of people," he said. "It's not that hard for me because it's still so fresh in my mind that all I have to do is look at that picture of me in handcuffs on that street. It just makes me throw up right now just thinking [about it]. Never again."
