Johnny Depp Spotted In The U.K. As $50 Million Defamation Trial Takes Week Break

Johnny Depp was seen out and about in the U.K. for the first time since his bombshell defamation trial against estranged ex-wife Amber Heard. He was spotted in East Sussex in England, near one of the many worldwide locations where the Pirates of the Caribbean actor owns property.

It was a lucky day for a fan who ran into Depp in the the port town of Newhaven on Wednesday, May 11. The embattled actor kindly posed for a quick snapshot, leaning in and putting his hands on the shoulders of the beaming fan. The man's spouse later shared the photo on Twitter, confirming the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them star was indeed in the U.K. this week.

This comes after the actor's ongoing defamation case paused for several days because of a conference Judge Penney S. Azcarate was scheduled to attend prior to the trial. It is set to resume proceedings on Monday, May 16.

Depp initially sued the Aquaman actress after she wrote an inflammatory 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post in which she called herself a victim of domestic violence. Although he was never specifically named in the piece, he firmly believes the article caused his reputation and career to be irreparably damaged. Heard countersued for $100 million.

Over the past few weeks, both Depp and Heard have given testimonies accusing the other of domestic abuse throughout the their marriage. The Black Mass actor alleged his ex-wife once severed part of his finger in a heated argument, while Heard claimed Depp repeatedly slapped her and once threatened to slice up her face.

"I don’t know how much time passed, but at some point, he had a broken bottle of against my face neck area by my jawline, and he told me he’d cut up my face," she told the jury in an emotional speech. "I was naked, slipping around on this tile... He’s screaming at me and saying I ruined his life."

The All the Boys Love Mandy Lane actress is currently in the middle of her testimony and is set to resume on Monday, May 16. Closing arguments are scheduled to begin on Friday, May 27.
